Unusual Hokkaido Trip to Public Open Air Onsen and Biei

Looking for a magical day trip from Sapporo that blends adventure, scenic landscapes, and authentic onsen relaxation? This one-day winter road trip to Biei and the hidden gem Fukiage Open-Air Onsen might just be the perfect getaway.

🚗 Starting the Day: Road Trip from Sapporo

The day begins with an early morning drive north from Sapporo. The journey takes around 2.5 hours, covering a little over 140 km, and is a scenic drive through snow-covered landscapes and rolling hills. If it’s your first time driving in snow, make sure to rent a 4WD vehicle, keep a steady speed, and avoid sudden braking. Winter tires are a must.

🧖‍♂️ Fukiage Open-Air Onsen (吹上露天の湯)

Hidden deep in the mountains, Fukiage Onsen is a natural, free hot spring tucked away in a forest clearing. Surrounded by thick snow and tall trees, soaking here feels like stepping into a fairytale. The steam rises into the crisp air, and the silence of the forest makes the experience incredibly peaceful.

There are two natural pools—an upper one that’s hotter and a lower one where most people bathe. As is traditional in Japanese outdoor baths, bathers often soak naked, so be respectful when visiting and avoid filming once others are around.

It’s one of the most authentic and untouched onsen experiences you can have in Hokkaido.

🍜 Lunch Stop – Ramen Santoka

After the onsen, a hot bowl of ramen is the perfect follow-up. Head over to Ramen Santoka, a well-loved chain known for its rich tonkotsu broth and perfectly tender chashu. Nothing beats warming up with a hot bowl after the open-air soak.

📸 Iconic Biei Photo Spots: Mild Seven Hills & Christmas Tree

Next, the trip continues to Mild Seven Hills, one of Biei’s most photographed winter landscapes. The rows of trees standing against the snow-dusted hills offer a postcard-perfect view.

Nearby is the “Lonely” Christmas Tree, a single pine tree standing alone in a snowy field. It’s simple but striking—especially during sunset when the skies turn pink and gold. These spots are iconic in Hokkaido for good reason, and winter only adds to their charm.

🌊 Final Stop: Shirahige Waterfall & Mt. Tokachi View

On the way back, make a stop at the parking area before Shirahige Waterfall for a fantastic panoramic view of Mount Tokachi and Mount Biei. Then head to Shirahige Falls, a stunning cascade that flows even in the freezing cold, creating mist and icy patterns around the cliffs. At night, the falls are often lit up, giving it a magical, otherworldly glow.

🎌 A Perfect Day in the Heart of Hokkaido

From wild natural onsen to iconic landscapes, this one-day road trip is the perfect way to experience the natural beauty and serenity of Hokkaido in winter. It’s a journey through quiet, scenic countryside—ideal for those looking to escape the city and discover Hokkaido’s lesser-known gems.
